Went to Maastrickt for lunch. Didn't see our friend Andre but had lunch anyway in the town square. Had to dodge the bikes more than the cars to explore the area. Stayed in Luxembourg for the night. Didn’t get to see much as it was late but loved the old town. Hope we can find enough time to go back to have a real explore before we leave here.

After a much needed sleep in we had breakfast provided by the hotel, croissants for breakfast works surprisingly well. We then left Frankfurt and proceeded to get stuck in a massive traffic jam on the Autobahn. The delay on the GPS varied between 1 hour and 5 minutes but in reality we barely moved 1km in half and hour.  Luckily we were heading in the opposite direction to the recommended detour and once we got to the next exit, we were all clear and on our way.

By this time we were hungry and stopped off in a random German town off the main road. I’m on a French diet so as it was before lunch it was nothing but coffee and cake for me. Everyone else seems agreeable to this concept.

So we found a nice little patisserie and soon discovered something that we didn’t know about European bees. They’re not just attracted to flowers and the various baked goods were all sweet enough for them to be all over. The waitress did not seem to be bothered though, apparently they are just like flies but not as bad.

I would tend to agree but one of them decided to take a liking to our food and this more than freaked Ashley out.

By lunch we had made it into the Netherlands (a small part anyway) and we stopped of in Maastrickt for lunch. As mum said, the place is dominated by bikes, they have some very well designated bike lanes and for areas they don’t, it’s just a free for all.

We managed to find a nice restaurant over looking the main square and all of the bike related action. We had a very friendly waiter who luckily spoke good English.  Ashley decided that of all of the nice things on the menu, she would get a 'Spiderman’ kids meal. The waiter had a field day with her for the rest of lunch and even hinted that he had a special surprise for her. It turned out that the kids meal came with plastic treasure chest full of ice cream and with a secret compartment in the bottom.  This revealed a fake tattoo and as well there was a lolly lipstick and sugar bead necklace. Needless to say she was a VERY lucky little girl.

The rest of the afternoon was spent driving to Luxembourg City and stopping off for a Belgium beer as the need arose.

The little of Luxembourg that we did see before it got dark looked very interesting.  I won’t go too much into it as we are going to drive back up there later in the trip and have a better look around.

And then another good night’s sleep, nearly over the flight induced sleep deprivation by now.
