What a long 26 hours!!! We slept, we watched movies, we listened to music, we ate and then we did it all again and again and again! Amazingly we didn't feel as bad as we probably looked at the end of it. We all lined up for showers in Frankfurt and then set off to see the world!
The drive along the Rhine river was just as pretty as everyone said it was. Here’s a castle! There’s a castle! Ooh aah! Could not believe how fast the water was flowing! Even remembered to drive on the right side of the road and sightsee at the same time.
Stopped in a quaint little German village for brunch. Didn’t seem real to be sitting there eating pastries and drinking coffee half a world away from our ordinary lives.
Found a cable car up to a magnificent view of the Rhine. Lots of fun riding the little car for two high above the vineyards.
Took a side detour to the German origins of the family – a little village called Lipporn. Great excitement when we actually found a tombstone with the family name in the cemetery. Felt right at home!!
Even more excitement and felt even more at home when we found a house with a yard that sooooo looked liked the ‘Berks’ backyard we all knew and loved. Felt that yes it obviously was in the genes that urge to gather and stack stray piles of wood, chunks of steel and anonymous other bits and pieces. Never know when you might need them!
Then on to Dusseldorf for the night. Bed felt soooo good!

Well we are finally getting something up on our blog, thanks to mum above for giving a great summary of our first day.
It’s been very busy but we’ve seen so much already and have just started to settle into the European way of life, food wise anyway. We had coffee and cake for breakfast, german sausage for lunch, and schnitzels for dinner. There may have been some beer in there somewhere. If you know Ashley and I it will not surprise you that food and drinks will feature regularly in this blog.
The driving has been interesting, Dad and I are adapting quite well to driving on the right hand side and avoiding high speed BMWs/Mercedes/Audis on the Autobahn. Ashley and Mum have been adapting well to sleeping in the car although I don’t think adapting is the right word.
Sleep is a precious gem at this point in our journey but we still had time to stop and smell the roses.
Anyway, more information to follow as we sort through our photos and catch up with our blog posts.

Keep up the blurb - just keep making us all envious! Yes, could see the Berghauser similarity with the local '"back yard"pic. Keep us posted! Love Anna

Hiya
The Bergs may have the gene for collecting useful rubbish but you just know that Ashes will keep it neat and clean.
So great to see what you are doing!! Jo's got tears cos she wishes she was there with you.
We`ve noticed that! What a great combination!
It all looks so nice, Europe is amazing with all its history, keep up the fluids.
