We drove to Lake Tahoe today. We went back into California and through the agricultural check point.  The state of California is zealous about people bringing in bugs or plants that will harm the state. There are check points on every major entrance highway.

We drove through the town of Truckee, CA.  It's a historic train town which has saved the buildings and the town.  There is still an Amtrak train and freight trains and the weekend excursions, but the main industry is tourism.  All the historic buildings have been resurrected as little shops for tourists.  There’s beading, gifts (many), home décor, etc.  Basically, it’s a walk-around-and-buy-stuff town.  But, the town is alive.

Tahoe is a huge lake of dark blue water.  It’s quite a sight with the snow capped mountains in the distance.  There were a few motor boats out as well as kayaks, jet skies and paddle boards.  There are several small towns around the lake that seem to be "beach towns with a mountain theme."  But off the main roads are some houses that are out of this world.  They live up to the Lake Tahoe hype.  In several places along the road the houses are built into the side of the mountain between the road and lake.  The garages are up at road level with the house below the garage level down to the lake. There were houses in every place along the road that could have a house on it. In a couple of places, new houses are being built.  We wondered if older ones had been torn down to make way for new houses.  Other houses a little removed from the edge of the water were large and expensive looking.  These are big money houses and inns and hotels.  But the lake is truly beautiful.
