Some Camp on Mt Kili

This day we had a tour of a community school system on Mt Kilimanjaro.  We set off up Mt Kili to take a tour with a British guy who was volunteering to improve the school system.  He was a very intelligent guy who has previous teaching experience and was living there for 18 months.  He had his hands in all kinds of business with the place and seemed to really be doing a good job.  We toured the library, computer center, hobby shop, and the vocational school.  We had to walk a little bit of a distance through the hills to reach them but they were interesting.  A lot of the buildings have just added windows and hope to add electricity in some of them soon.  It makes you realize how lucky the western world has it.  The budget of just one US school could support I’m guessing 20 schools here.  I remember hearing that my High School football stadium stands cost $1 million back in the 90’s.  And that was only for the home-field side of the stands.  What a waist of money.  Just seeing the wood shop here made me think how kids back in my middle school shop class were making bongs to smoke out of.  And these kids were making furniture to sell to help pay for school.  The kids even have to pay for their school lunches.  A few of us including me, made a donation of 10,000 TZ Schilling(US $7.80) to pay a years worth of school lunches for one child.  The school system was probably way ahead of other schools because of the fact that the head person was a British lawyer who goes back home to raise donations and I guess is very persuasive.  It was interesting to see the school and learned a lot from the guy.  We headed back to our camp and were fed another awesome African traditional dinner.  Dinner was followed by some pretty fun drinking games on the foothills of Mt Kili.
