Date: July 2nd
Location: Daytona International Speedway
Time: Pretty late (!)
Well, here we go, the event of the 4th July weekend (well for NASCAR fans anyway!). The race was meant to start around 8pm, instead it was more like 10.30pm, by the time they had dried out the track, and the drivers had completed some test laps under yellow. To be frank it didn't look like it was going ahead (which would have been rather disappointing considering we travelled half way round the world to see it!). It had been raining all day, the car parks had flooded, and we were gearing up for the cancellation announcement. The only entertainment coming from the F15's which were amusing themselves with a few fly overs!
But, eventually, as if it was a miracle the rain stopped! Jo-Jo sung the national anthem, and the race was on! It was loud, there were crashes, there were cheers....it was great! In the end Tony Stewart won, after leading nearly every lap (apart from when he pitted). The fireworks went up, Stewart climbed up the fence, we tried to remember where we parked the car (somewhere a couple of miles away, in the middle of a mosquito ridden wood!). Here's my attempt at some pics. In some I managed to get a car in the picture!
Pete.
