Today was a very early start...4:30am! And who would've thought with such an early start that it was going to be right up there with one of the best days of our Europe trip!
We had to be walking at 5:20am to catch the 5:40am tram to the city to get the 6:32am train to Koblenz to then get Bus 1 to the port to get our 9am cruise boat. Sounds complicated but it wasn’t too bad! A lot of people up at that time of morning using public transport. Trav even allowed time to get a coffee from Maccas. We arrived with about 10minutes to spare and found a nice spot on the back of the boat undercover. We decided to do the cruise on the Rheine River from Koblenz to Bingen as this is the prettiest – they call it the romantic cruise, lots of gorgeous views and castles.
We grabbed a hot chocolate and took in all the views. It started to rain but it wasn’t too cold and it was good the boat was undercover. We sat and listened to a few Aussies having a conversation and sharing their travel stories....quite amusing!
Decided to head inside as the weather was coming in cold. We grabbed some lunch while watching the world just pass us by. It was very relaxing.
The cruise went for 6 hours in total as we were going up stream. But it went quick. It stopped at about 15 stops along the way to pick up more passengers and to drop off some.
A little after lunch we treated ourselves to the kinder surprise eggs that we packed. I cracked mine opened and shook the egg inside to see what toy I was going to get....I enjoy putting together my toy. Damn it...it sounded just like a figurine... no Shrek toy to put together for me. I turned to Trav and pouted "I think I have a shit toy" (in hope that if he scored a better toy, he would feel sorry for me and give me his to put together). I opened up my egg and found a ring inside. What a ring... what has a ring got to do with the Shrek movie? Trav had a huge grin on his face and said “I recon we should get married”. I was like “WHAT....is this a real ring? Are you asking me or telling me?” “Will you marry me?” he nervously said. I was speechless. Being a girl you normally 'rehearse’ these sorts of magically moments that could possibly happen in your life, right from a very young age. And me, being speechless, is out of the ordinary especially at a time like this! I managed to say yes with a dopey look on my face. Trav just sat there smiling and finally put the ring on my finger. “Can I have your chocolate now?” he sheepishly said. We sat there like 2 goons smiling at each other for about half an hour and then I finally got all excited and had to call mum and dad, Lee and Jess and everyone else before my phone ran out of credit.
We thoroughly enjoyed the last bit of the cruise and caught 2 trains back to Cologne and enjoyed a delicious meal and a Kölsch Beer to celebrate (a Kölsch Beer is very crisp and clean beer served in 200ml glasses to keep it fresh). The whole time I’m admiring my left hand. It’s never looked this attractive before.
I’ve always wondered if being engaged changes things. I recon it changes things for the better. And I’m not talking about having a gorgeous rock on my left hand...even though that is a pretty awesome feeling! I guess it’s nice to know that you finally belong to someone.
