Today's plan is to do two of the Top Gear Routes, get Megan her "green thing" from the Hawkshead at Betsw-y-coed and find that huge tower. In the evening Megan and Robin are joining us at the Cow Shed.
 
In a day of many enjoyable chores the first was to go to Porthmadog to get some petrol. No problems there. Then to Betsw-y-coed to get a "green thing" for Megan. Sold out. Next was a little more productive: the A543 followed by the B4501 then the B5105 and then as a special treat up into a little place on the B4407 called Rhys Ifans or something like that.
 
The A543 traverses high up into the moors of Denbighshire and slips past some beautiful views, apparently. As you will see, the cloud cover made any useful visibility virtually nil. There was also a force ten gale. Next up was the wooded section of the B4501. This is a super little road and you genuinely can see round all the bends so you can put your foot down quite confidently. The B5105 was my favourite though. No scenery as such, but a terrific road to drive down.
 
However all three of the Top Gear roads were completely blown away by my mum's suggestion of taking the B4407 through Ifans. The picture, and indeed the only picture, I took today was on this very road. The scenery is superb and you want to stop every ten yards, if only there was somewhere to stop! Even on day like this when the cloud makes up more of the scenery than the land and water fills every dip in the road, it is a real adventure. You begin by going up and up and up then suddenly you feel you're on the top of the world. My in-car thermometer stated the outside temperature was 11˚C and this was confirmed later by ice forming on the windscreen due to the perilously cold wind chill.
 
Lavern is now quite dirty but I'm hoping the evening's monsoon in conjunction with the force million gale will clean her.
 
Now I'm off to the Cow Shed. I fancy a pie in celebration!
 
The pie I chose in the end was the Lamb and Leek variety. Delicious in every respect. The only poor part of the meal was the paté I chose as the starter. The pâté itself was lovely, though I cannot see the point of serving such a huge slice of it with a diminutive piece of toast. Surely anyone with half an idea of surface area could see the only way of spreading the pâté evenly across one slice would be to use both sides. Yes I could have asked for another slice, but that isn't the point. The chef should serve the correct amount of bread in order to enjoy the pâté.
