"A museum that considers the relationship
between people and nature.
A place where one's physical experience
is stimulated intellectually and emotionally
with the rhythm of the Seo Inland Sea
of Japan's quiet nature and the art and spaces
created for this specific site."

- extract from museum literature

The Chinchu Art Museum claims to consider the relationship between people and nature. This is pretentious bullshit - the museum explores nothing of the sort. It is one of the most cut-off and introspective places I have ever been and, if anything, it explores the relationship between people and the fortress of their own intellect contemplating nature. There is a difference. There is a pane of glass between the two.
The Benesee House Museum on the other hand is a beautiful expression of Ando's architecture (before he went too far) and it's a wonderful balance between the concrete materiality of human thought and the stunning vistas of the islands of the Inland Sea - especially when the works of Richard Long occupy the foreground.
