Have been worried about my legs and in particular my knees for a few days now. It started in my left knee - a tightness in the tendons at the back of the knee, which if straightened fired a shot of electric pain to which it instantly jolted back bent. It feels like I might have hyper-extended the knee - pushed myself into some bizarre yogic position that has me folded like a Mongolian contortionist. But I have no recollection of doing this and I was left walking around for a day with both knees bent, like an old man fearing his hip would go again if he walked normally. But this helped only to spread the problem and as the day progressed my left calf and thigh muscles became increasingly mottled with tiny spasms of localised cramps - twisting pin pricks. By the next day the symptoms had spread further and my right leg was now suffering as much as the left, first with the taught knee tendons, then with the spasms and twitches and cramps.
I'm sure it's the weight of the bag. That thing is so heavy it's ridiculous - and yet when I go through it I can't find anything that can be jettisoned, except for a few books and they're... well, they're books.
We have also been pushing ourselves really hard again. In Kyoto Oliver was awed by our energies but all the running around is taking its toll - by the time we reached the island of Naoshima I was absolutely shattered and had to get an early night.
Things seem to be on the mend now. I am taking care when lifting the bag, and when carrying it am not twisting on my knees at all. This, along with a soak in an onsen and two nights of slathering them with Tiger Balm, seems to have pacified the pain. The knees still ache a bit but the muscle spasms along with the twinges, twitches and jolts of cramp have, temporarily ceased.
