Wake up and immediately peek out under the bottom of the window blind to see a China de-saturated by an all consuming terracotta cloud washing out grey earthen clustered houses, shops, giant factories - all marred by the same fogged non-colour.
Uniformed railwaymen standing erect all day in clear perspex boxes beside the track, one white-gloved hand holding a red flag, the other a green.
And then the colour of Beijing. The prosperity, the modernity and the thousands and thousands of Chinese descending on Beijing Central Station on National Day - the 1st October - the day the guide books tell you to avoid the city. I immediately feel like I'm back home, back amongst a familiar people. The snappy speech, the swarming taxis, the uncompromising orders of our guide - You will take photo here - You are tired. You will rest now.
