Extending my understanding of a whole branch of European art that I never knew existed. A clear sense of the Russian group going to Paris, learning, borrowing, stealing, perfecting and bringing it all back home. So invigorating to see all these masterpieces by masters you`ve never heard of.
Particularly enjoyed Fyodor Vasiliev`s landscapes, Arkhip Kuindzhi`s mind-blowing landscapes, Mikhail Vrubel for his crazed individualism, Philipp Malyavin`s wonderful dancing peasants and also Vastily Surikov, Valentin Serov, Nikolai Roerich, Yary Podlayasky, Andrei Ushin, Ivan Shishkin & Ivan Aivazovsky.
Being shadowed around the museum by our young, politicised guide. Off-putting to turn away from contemplating a paining to find your movements mirrored by another being on the periphery of your vision.
Turning a corner to be confronted by a portrait of an arrogant, teenage me! Very disconcerting.
