By late afternoon in Nara my body shuts down - it has attained its goal and is not going any further. By half seven I have fallen into a sleep that is to last for a blissful twelve hours. I wear a surgical mask with a menthol swab insert and have taken some suspiciously bitter dry grains - a herbal medicine given to me by the pharmacist. To my amazement I awake refreshed, breathing clearly and without the slightest cough.

You should have made space for Dad's haliborange in your rucksack and there would have been no need for a menthol surgical mask!
