The rain had finally lifted and we were treated to a hot sunny day in the country's capital. We were amazed to find out there were no skyscrapers in Washington. The monuments were all within walking distance from one another situated in a city centre that was mostly integrated into gorgeous lush green parks. Everything was in full spring bloom. We walked about 10km with Sam going from the White House, to Capitol Hill, the World War II Memorial and both Washington and Lincoln monuments. Throughout our day, people stopped us to inquire about Sam. Hoardes of children and people kept coming up to us to pet him. Were it not for the dog, we probably wouldn't enjoy the niceties of chatting up the locals and other tourists.

Our accommodations of late have mostly been in campgrounds or in the car at rest areas along the highway. Throughout the night, Sam usually weasels his way from his designated spot at our feet to somewhere between us and we often find ourselves pressed to the sides of the car while he stretches out. Sam's protective nature has emerged and we find him often growling at any passerbys that linger to look into our car. Good boy!

We are now in Frederick, Maryland, an old civil war town touring about. We are off to Virginia to do our first backpacking overnight hike into the Appalachian Mountain trails. Will we see any bears? We shall see....
