Having left Ottawa and yet another tearful goodbye to the Groens, off we were to Yankee-land. Crossing the border was no problem for me or Sam, hell, the officer didn't even check Sam's papers nor bat an eye at me. All they were concerned with was Karin, and her bomb-making skills as an engineer. "Are you a real engineer? What kind of engineer are you? Where did you work? What kind of company is Celestica? Do you know anyone in the States?". Sam and I, we were chopped liver.

Our 9 1/2 hr gruelling drive brought us through the beautiful hills of Vermont, New Hampshire and finally into Boston, Massasschusets. Exhausted from the drive, we nearly had a car accident. A deer on the side of the highway was making it's way across. I hit my brakes before the unfortunate car just ahead of us slammed right into the poor thing. It flew up into the air and was tossed back into the woods. The car too hit the brakes (a little too late) and swerved off to the shoulder. Lucky for us, we drove only through a cloud of windshield glass and disturbingly, a cloud of fur. The tension quotient was certainly up for the rest of the drive to the hotel.

The next day, rested and rejuvenated, we were off to see Kevin run his very first Boston Marathon. We had found a nice patch of dirt off the side around the 10 mile mark and parked ourselves on our lawn chairs by the water station. What started as a slow trickle of runners soon developed into a sea of sweaty people, over 21,000 runners would pass by our very spot. Most of them were wearing white shirts, white hats and white running shoes. Lucky for us, Kevin stood out by wearing a white shirt, white hat and white running shoes. We brought Sam out hoping Kevin would spot him, but luckily, Karin spotted a runner running past us with "KEVIN" written down his arm. Go figure. Stepping off the route to give us each a hug and a pat on the head for Sam, Kevin returned to the lemming march, I'm sure waiting for the perfect moment to say "Bye girls, gotta run!" Ha, ha, so clever ;) Runners were also starting to pull off the route by where we were, apparently in dire need of a bathroom. With only one port-o-potty, scores of runners where whipping out their willies before they even came to a dead stop, to piss on the grass. Sam was mesmerized, we were more than a little grossed out. After a wonderful dinner with Rich, Rich's sister and friend, Kevin, Alison and Kevin's folks, we left Boston and spent our first night sleeping in the car en route to Cape Cod. It would be the last we'd see any familiar faces for quite some time.
