We took a public bus to the Pont Du Gard today, an ancient Roman aqueduct built between AD 38 and AD 52. We hiked up to a promontory point for pictures then camped out on a broken concrete staircase and had a picnic. Our tour leader, Stan, played his didjereedo instrument. Hard to describe but it was almost a spiritual experience. The sound was low and enveloped you. He was just jamming without any formal music and it was very cool especially with the view of the Pont Du Gard in the background. We swam in the river and relaxed on the stones and the beach and headed back in the late afternoon as the clear blue sky was beginning to cloud over.

We had a walking tour of the town yesterday taking us through formal gardens, up an ancient Roman tower and to a square where we had some drinks and experienced really lousy service. Later at dinner we drank the usual French aperitif, Pastie. Anise flavored, the liquor is so thick you dilute it with water.

Tomorrow we travel to Marseilles via local train for some seaside time.
