Vikas and I hired a motorbike and went to check oot Auroville for the afternoon.

It's just aboot 12 km from Pondicherry.  It is a settlement established by 'The Mother', one of the gurus from the Ashram..she named it after the first Guru Aurobindo.  It's an international community, a project in human unity that has ballooned to encompass more than 80 rural settlements spread over 20km with over 2000 residents, two-thirds foreigners from 38 countries.

After driving on the busy main road and then through some villages, we arrived in a quiet peaceful area of land, filled with trees and nature.  It's complete irony from just a few kms away.  Each settlement has its own area or work interest and expertise from traditional medicinal plants, to renewable energy to organic farming.

At the spiritual centre of Auroville is an astonishing structure (kind of like epcot centre but not so tacky) called the Matrimandir.  Its gold and contains a silent inner chamber and it not open to visitors.  None of Auroville is actually.  You can just take a walk through the trees and get a glimpse of the Matrimandir and vast land of green grass and clay dirt.  It was really interesting to learn aboot such a community...based on spirital well-being really and leading a modest life but true life.

Here is what the website has to say...
"Auroville means City of Dawn. It was founded in 1968 as a place where people of
goodwill from all over the world could come together to make a living experiment
in human unity and serve a greater dream and greater purpose. It is a site of
spiritual and physical research. Presently some 2000 people from 35+ countries
and India are gathered in this amazingly creative place, located 160 kms south
of Chennai, India, on the Coromandel Coast near Pondicherry. The
city-in-the-make is intended for 50.000 inhabitants and works closely with the
local population from the surrounding villages in whose midst it is emerging"
"Greetings from Auroville to all men of good will. Are invited to
Auroville all those who thirst for progress and aspire to a higher and truer
life."
"Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries
are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics
and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity."
The Mother, Auroville’s founder
