Where I stayed
It's such a small area of land (maybe that's why it's so rich and developed as there isn't much to take care of)...and not much, if any is left untouched, it's filled with manmade structures - roads, buildings, skyscrapers, parks, cheesy tourist attractions, lots of shopping and even the beaches are manmade. Everyone was in such a big hurry, playing with some sort of gadgets (video games, phones, ipods, what not), looking for the latest fashion. For the first few hrs the luxuries and the cleanliness was nice but then i didn't particularly enjoy it i have to say...no one saying hello on the streets anymore or taking time to enjoy the day...people too concerned with where they're going or what they have to do. Tis a shame it's like that in our world...
Some FYI - Singapore became an island of opportunity hundreds of years ago after the British opened there as trading outpost with free port status. The island's population surged, as settlers arrived from China, India, Middle East, and Europe in the hopes of a better life. Boats filled the Singapore River and businesses and homes sprouted up everywhere. Today it is still the 2nd busiest port in all of the world (what's the busiest?? i don't know) with thousands of ships going in and out constantly. I suppose that's why it is so prosperous...as it doesn't have any of its own resources, just boats.
In my two days, i spent way too much money, it's incredible..same amount as i'd spend in a week normally, so i had to get out and wanted to as well. The one day, i had just intended to go and lay on the beach on this tiny island, Sentosa just a short ride away from the coast of Singapore. But somehow i got coaxed into this big tourist trap..first the lineup just to get the monorail ticket to get this island was ridiculous and i ended up in the queue for the 'package deal'. Since i figured i may want to do two tourist thing on the list (particularly the street luge ride and the tower), i figured ahhh might as well do the package. So the whole day i ended up going from one manmade, money grabbing attraction to another, 5 in my package! (i know it's a difficult life) and only layed on the manmade beach for like half hr and spend $100 in a day! yikes! ohhh no....and i much prefer to experience the culture rather than the touristy things anything but hey...
So out with Singapore and back to paritally famaliar territory....where everyone says hello and take things a bit slower... Malaysia!
