I left Sydney yesterday for the chaos of Bangkok. A 9hr flight from Australia, bad seat in middle of plane, sitting down for hours and lack of sleep, all of these things contributed to me nearly passing out mid flight!! What a welcome to Thailand, 30,000 ft lying on my back with my legs in the air getting the blood back to my head! Talked to an interesting guy from Manchester who was being deported from Australia to pass away the last hour, then Bangkok here I am.
First impressions, hot and humid as expected, people very friendly and helpful, busy roads full of taxis and tuk-tuks, temples and statues, bright lights and incense - loving it already and not even arrived at my hotel.
After a good night sleep I decided to spend my first day exploring the Chatuchak Weekend Market, an easy task with a little over 6,000 stalls cleverly arranged in a maze formation (or at least thats how it seemed) The place was a shoppers paradise, arranged in sections and then split down into smaller stalls, everything from small china animals to near life size wooden elephants, paper flowers to exquisite orchids, designer rip offs to traditional Thai clothing, porcelain cats to fluffy kittens, an interior designers Nirvana. I kept getting lost but always seemed to end up in the puppy section, trying to navigate by shops I thought I remembered the first time around....."turn left at the pictures of Elvis and then right past the man selling antique 'marital aids'! straight on over the open drains...., shit back to the puppys again!" The heat started to get to me after hitting the 'dried fish section', I thought a nice cool beer would help. I went into a cafe, deep in the heart of the market and asked for a beer, to be told "No beer today for erections" I confirmed that he was not aloud to sell me a beer, he said "Yes, until erection over at six o'clock" As impressed as I might have been by his apparent virility I realised that there must have been government elections on today and the city was dry until the evening. I decided that I would come back another day to do some serious spending and made my way back to the hotel for lunch, my second shower of the day and the mini bar in my room! Thailand has already captivated me and I can't wait to tell you more.
