We crossed the border into Chile and headed to Puerto Varas, a small town on a Lake with a picturesque snow capped volcano behind it. The surrounding countryside was beautiful, fields full of colourful spring flowers, spectacular mountain ranges and volcanos.
I took a day trip to the Island of Chiloe, about 3 hours from where we were staying. b There we visited a penguin colony, where Magellan and Humbold penguins live together on three small protected islands. We all wore waiders and took a motor boat to see them, on the way we saw Sea Lions plying in the water, the other boat even saw a rare Sea Otter. The penguins were very amusing, ungainly on the land as they hopped up the cliff into their burrows but fast and sleek in the water around the island. I never expected to see wild penguins on this trip but it was a real highlight.
