Amazon Queen - Arrived in Belem
Sep 03, 2005
Spent two hours this morning trying to get laundry done, the smallest of tasks take hours when you donīt speak a word of Portugese, the poor lady has her work cut out, the clothes that I wore in the jungle now have a life of their own! Off to explore the city next and visit the harbour, there is some beautiful colonial architecture to see.
Arrived in Belem yesterday afternoon, after an amazing four day journey along the Amazon River, places and romantic names that I only every drempt of visiting whilst reading my geography books. The boat journey was a fantastic opportuinity to interact and meet the local Brazillians, who are very friendly people and know how to party! The majority of passengers slept in hammocks in 2 large open decks, about 250 of them squashed together, young babies with their mothers, old people, musicians, foreign travellers, it was like a small society for four days. Our group were lucky enough to have small cabins with air-conditioning which was invaluable in the heat. In the evening people gathered on the decks and drank beer, played cards and dominoes and listened to live music made by various travellers, you were forced to slow down and relax as there was nothing else to do - except eat rice, beans, spaghetti and chicken which were were served at every meal (except for the last one which I believe was dog food as we had run out of chicken, I stuck to rice and beans on that one!)
