Let's paint the picture...... we had een told to allow an hour to get to the hotel for the networking evening, not far away but rush hour traffic is horrendous. So, there we were - stood on the roadside outside our apartment trying to hail a taxi, all were full. It was hot, sticky, we were in smart clothes & getting fed up. Along came a woman on a Rickshaw, looked at the hotel address (we had printed it in Chinese & English) and said it would be 3 RMB (a pittance - 30p ish). Off she cycled, well, these days they are electric bikes so not much pedaling is required these days!! As soon as we set off she kept shouting across to other rickshaws & people - we guess she was asking where the hotel was, suddenly a u turn in the street against all the traffic, she asked another person, crashing into her Rickshaw!!
We were wondering if we'd ever get there at that point! More questions, more u turns, she stopped further down the road & off loaded us to another guy!!!! Then tried to charge us 30 RMB, approx £3 - quite a hike form the 3 quoted & we hadn't gone far!!
The guy continued with us nervously sat in the back, got to a major intersection & kept shouting 50 RMB to us, we'd gone a couple of hundred yards!! Disgusted, we got out & left him to it. Hailed a taxi sucessfully, he decided he didn't want to take us - not sure why, perhaps he didn't know the way, then found another willing volunteer......!! All in all it took us 1 hr 20 mins. The final taxi journey was only the equivalent of £2.40 and we were in that for nearly an hour. I guess it would cost you that much to sit in a London cab, let alone go anywhere!!
Anyway, we arrived at the JW Marriott for the networking evening, nice glass of wine, canapes, fab terrace outside & the networking began. Lots of people eager to talk at you about themselves, thrust their cards at you - luckily we've been reading a very good recommended book about networking, and this is NOT what you do!!!! We did meet a couple of really nice people as well who could be potential friends.
Another good day at work, lots more role play - and we are getting better at it! The boss is pleased anyway so far so that's the main thing.
Off home now, and meeting our Kiwi friend Alistair at Paddy's bar tonight for quiz night. That's after I attempt cooking noodles as it's definitely my turn!!!!
That's all for now folks!!
