Just a short drive today of 190 miles from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. On the way, the Native American landscape was evident with reservations all around us. Many tribes now own casinos around the country and we saw many of these advertised in the roadside billboards. We also passed "Lotawatah Road" and, yes, it was by a large lake! My favourite by far was “Kickapoo Street”.

Our destination was a Howard Johnson motel, one of the first motel chains in the USA. (Judging by the state of the place, I think it may not have been decorated since it opened!) On the way, we replenished Mike & Jenny's supply of Polos with the US equivalent - Lifesavers.

As our journey was so short, we had plenty of time to explore Oklahoma City. First, we visited the Paseo Art District, a small area a few miles out of town that housed several private art galleries and a couple of quaint cafes. After a late lunch, we moved onto downtown Oklahoma City itself. What a beautiful city! We made our way though the afternoon heat and strong wind down to the site of the 1995 Oklahoma bombing. There, we found a lovely memorial with completely still water that looked like a mirror had been placed onto the ground, and chairs representing each of the individuals who died on that fateful April day.

In the evening, we visited the main part of town called Bricktown – an area of warehouses that has been renovated over the last eleven years, adding a canal, a ball park and numerous restaurants, nightclubs and bars. It looked beautiful as the sun set and the place began to light up. We took a spontaneous ride on a water taxi that took us along the 'streets', where we took in a gorgeous view of the downtown skyline as the sun went down.

We found a Spanish tapas bar along the water edge and settled there for our evening meal. I had been looking forward to some ice-cream but felt rather full after the little dishes of goodies. I turned to Mike and said “I don’t think I can fit in a gelato.” His reply? “Let’s just hope you can fit in the car!”

Tomorrow Lubbock, Texas!
