I'm in Kanab today, which is also known as Little Hollywood or Frontier Movie Town as around 150 movies and television programs have been filmed in this area. Most of them have been Westerns as it is ideally located to the east of Zion National Park, south of Bryce Canyon National Park, west of the Grand Staircase and north of the Grand Canyon. What more could you want for a cowboy movie? Some of the old movie sets have been preserved and there's also a "Little Hollywood Walk of Fame Plaques" that weaves throughout the whole town (about 70 of them).

Here's a little sample of who and what has been filmed in or around Kanab ...

1938 - The Lone Ranger (Lee Powell, Chief Thundercloud)
1941 - Billy the Kid (Robert Taylor)
1943 - The Desparadoes (Randolph Scott, Glenn Ford)
1943 - My Friend Flicka (Roddy McDowell)
1944 - Buffalo Bill (Maureen O'Hara, Joel McCrea)
1953 - Pony Express (Charlton Heston)
1956 - The Lone Ranger (again) (Clayton Moore, Jay Silverheels)
1956 - The Rainmaker (Katherine Hepburn, Burt Lancaster)
1961 - The Misfits (Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift)
1965 - The Greatest Story Ever Told (Charlton Heston, John Wayne)
1968 - Planet of the Apes (Charlton Heston)
1977 - The Exorcist (Linda Blair)
1991 - Point Break (Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves)
1994 - Maverick (Jodie Foster, Mel Gibson)
1996 - Broken Arrow (John Travolta, Christian Slater)
2001 - Planet of the Apes (again) (Mark Walhberg, Tim Roth)

And the list goes on and on. Amongst the dozen or so tv shows filmed here were F-Troop, Lassie, The Lone Ranger (naturally) and the Six Million Dollar Man.

Quite amazing I thought, and despite all the Hollywood attention over the years it remains a really lovely little country town. It used to claim only one traffic light, but there's two now, a second one went in not so long ago (local timing).

Just outside Kanab are the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, 1200 acres of pinkish sand dunes that occurred naturally due to wind tunnels between the mountains and cliffs breaking down the Navajo sandstone. You'll see in the pics this unique spot has also attracted movie attention with the Arabian Nights and Ali Baba being filmed here.

But movies aside this would be an awesome place for a childhood family vacation as anyone can access any of the dunes on any off-road vehicle and seemingly without any age restrictions.

It's RV city here and they've all got OHVs behind them (in Australian language that's caravans towing motorbikes, quadbikes and beach buggies) to use on the dunes - awesome! I saw a kid about 10 years old strapping on his helmet and heading out on a quad bike, then two young teenage girls (about Georgia and Lucinda's age) driving an open top beach buggy, and of course of bucket loads of dads out there tearing it up on anything they can get their hands on. What a cool family holiday!

P.S. Carola their Levi's are cheaper here than the Vegas outlets, but they didn't have the lovely coloured ones you bought, they did however have long leg length ones for me, yah! I knew I was right to wait. Chris you were soooo right about how cheap they are here - $35.00 a pair!!!!

the unstable tour guide on

Chester, Festus, Doc, Newly, Miss Kitty and Marshall Dillon might be offended that they were left off your list as the long running series 'Gunsmoke' was also filmed around Kanab. The latest and one of the best Westerns filmed here was Clint Eastwood's, 'The Outlaw Josie Wales', which is well worth viewing. Keep on truckin', Tracey.

Now if I listed all the movies and shows made in Kanab there'd be over 150 I'd have to mention and that would leave me no free time to meet interesting tour guides! Keep on truckin? Are you serious, you saw my rental car, it's hardly capable of truckin'
