Because I'd already returned my rental and Mark was out in the field, I found myself trapped in Martinsburg on Monday.  My only venture out of the hotel before evening was a walk down the street, thru the Wal-mart, thru the Martinsburg Mall, and out the other side to a Quizno's for lunch.  Martinsburg's public transport system is a bit lacking (and perhaps nonexistent) and the sidewalks aren't exactly easy to follow.  This essentially made me the only person walking down the street.  Today was ridiculously hot so I waited for the trip into downtown till later in the evening when Mark could drive me.
I've asked several people in Martinsburg over the past week what there is to do around here and have gotten the same response each time, "nothing, this is pretty much it" and to be honest, I think they're correct.  Although they have tons of lovely places nearby, as evident by my week of day traveling, this particular town needs fewer chain stores and a more developed downtown (or maybe even a park).
I'm convinced though that all towns must have at least one gem.  And the gem for Martinsburg, in my opinion, was the giant apple.  I have no clue what purpose it serves but like to think it's unique to Martinsburg (and completely appropriate since there are apple orchards everywhere).  There were also artist's palettes set up around downtown.  They'd been painted in different designs by I have no clue who.  The girl who picked me up from Enterprise didn't know what they were for or where they'd come from.  Apparently they'd just shown up one day.  I'm glad they were there.  It gave some character to this little town that has become my home for the past week.  Thankfully though I get to go back to Tennessee  tomorrow.  At least, I think I do.
