I made a trip Friday morning to the National Park Service's Cartographic Lab located in Harpers Ferry for a little tour (amazing!) and came back later in the afternoon with Mark for a walk around town.   A bus will take you into the historical part of town.  We were the only ones on board (which didn't seem like the most efficient use of federal funds) and I'm fairly convinced our bus driver was near death.  We only had 2 hours before we had to catch the final bus out (there's a 2 mile uphill walk back to the parking area if you miss the last one).  Although our time was brief and everything was already closed, we found Harpers Ferry rather charming.  We hiked up to Jefferson's Rock for, according the Jefferson, a view that made crossing the Atlantic worth it.  We weren't v. impressed and I can only think that Jefferson hiked up there in the fall when the leaves had all changed...either that or views on the other side of the pond aren't v. good.  After walking to Maryland and back (compliments of a bridge over the Potomac) and briefly strolling thru town, we headed out (but not before meeting Mike and Jen - the 2 friendliest people on the planet).
