July 8 - July 11, 2006 Cooking School

So, as many of you know, Todd and I came to Chiang Mai during our honeymoon to Thailand. We loved it so much we had to come back but this time our sole purpose was to learn some Thai Cooking (oh, and Todd's favorite of course....the Night Bazaar! - we couldn't miss that!).

We stayed at the same hotel that we stayed at for our honeymoon and signed up for three days of cooking at the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School (aparently the first in Chiang Mai). We learned a lot! Most of all, we learned that Thai cooking takes no time at all (with the exception of making curry paste which is quite fast as well); if you burn the curry you have a lot of hard work in remaking the paste; you know it's hot when your eyes start to burn, your nose starts to run, and you sneeze uncontrollably; waterchestnuts for desert are not really that bad; and Todd is a master when it comes to presentation (flavor as well of course)!

We cooked six meals a day and yes....we ate every single one of them (of course we had to leave some unfinished because our stomachs were just a little too stuffed and uncomfortable by course # 4).

Outside of our cooking class we spent our time at the hotel pool and the night bazaar. The night bazaar is a huge shopping area filled with all kinds of vendors and stays open very late and it's a great place to bargain. I know a lot of you who love it! Since we did most of our shopping in China and Viet Nam we got away with out spending a dime at the Night Bazaar (well we did indulge in a $5 ice cream cone at Hagan Daaz but I can't say that counts! it wasn't an official Night Bazaar vendor and there certainly wasn't any bargaining!).

Next Stop: Koh Tao for some final sun and relaxation!
