La Pedrera was a chilled out surfer's town that was located about halfway between Punte del Esta and the Uruguayan/Brazilian border. If you didn’t surf, then there was pretty much nothing else to do here. Unfortunately, we were not aware of this when we booked 3 nights at our hostel! Luckily for us we were able to cancel one night and avoid going stir crazy from boredom. We did have a surfing lesson booked in at one point, however, there was no ATM that accepted credit in town and we were running low on funds. Therefore if we wanted to escape this place we needed to use our precious cash for purchasing a bus ticket instead.

Whilst I give it a pretty bad rap, there were a couple of things to do here. During our time we managed to walk along the beach to a shipwreck and check out some more bikini bums (unfortunately they weren’t as predominant here as they were in Punte, as this might have kept my interest for a bit longer). We also checked out a number of cute little shops along the main street that were full of crap that mum would have appreciated. Unfortunately it’s not Mothers Day for another few months, so we didn’t get her anything. It was also here that I tried Fernet and Cola (a popular choice amongst the locals)… This was the nastiest alcoholic beverage that I have tried. The two ingredients combined tasted like you had just swallowed a mouthful of insect repellant, so needless to say I didn’t come close to finishing it! To finish off, we spent the nights sacrificing our bodies to the dozens of mosquitoes that had made it into our dorm room. I don’t think Uruguay has Malaria?
