Las Vegas is in the southern part of the state of Nevada, about 80km east of the California border. The city is divided into two main parts: a compact downtown called Glitter Gulch and the Strip, a corridor of hotels and casinos.
We took a shuttle from L.A. together with about ten other people and a kiwi driver. It was a great bunch and we got to know a quite a few of them during the time in Vegas. The kiwi driver could never stop talking though; luckily some of what he said was actually quite amusing.
Vegas definitely looks best at night and that's when we arrived. Blinking lights as far as the eye could see. One of the casinos, the Luxor, is built like a huge pyramid and there's
a lightbeem coming out from the top of it, costing $50 000 an hour to operate.
Dangerous so dangerous
The hostel we lived in was kind of dodgy but seemed alright. A funny thing happened though when we started walking a bit towards the city. We stopped for a while and this guy asked if we needed directions. "Well, whatever you do", he said, don't go down that way - it's dangerous there. Guess where he was pointing? The area where the hostel was situated...
Not far from the hostel was "mini" strip covered by an enormous roof. On the hour, every hour was a lightshow with music exhibited on this roof - pretty cool. Together with our new Australian friends, Sam, Maree and June we found ourselves a bus to the main strip. Everything from mini-Paris to Venice to New York, there's certainly nothing like it.
I tried my luck at blackjack and actually managed to win $150 at the Luxor. With only a $20 input I must be one of the few people who leave Vegas with more money than they came with.
Saturday we went to the Grand Canyon. When we came back it was time to hit the city for real. We rented a limousine together with some of the others at the hostel and were taken around the strip drinking champagne. We were dropped of at MGM Grand and then went for a kind of pub-crawl: Coyote Ugly, House of Blues and Ra.
Then finally on Sunday it was time to return to L.A. where we stayed at the Orbit hostel and had an unforgettable round of Uno together with Sam, June, Maree and a nutter of a Japanese guy!
