Up early again (really beginning to resent early mornings) to get the boat to Phnom Penh. we travelled through the Tonle Sap Lake and river. It was quite a welcome change from trains and buses and a really nice way to see the Cambodian countryside, especially avoiding the horrendously bumpy roads. They honestly make the back road to my house seem like the M8.
When we arrived in Phnom Penh we hadn't even got off the boat before people start touting you for tuk tuks. We were quite rude to one guy but you have to be that way to make sure you don't get ripped off and abused (we learned that lesson quickly)! Again, its hard because these people are desperate to make money and they see tourists as being the easiest way particularly because they know how much money we have in comparison to them. i later found out that Cambodia is so expensive because fuel is extortionate here and they import almost everything. Inflation is rife (how much of an economics/finance geek do I sound?!!!?) It is quite interesting though, makes me kinda think I really want to something in development finance in the future. In Phnom Penh poverty slaps you in the face every two seconds, making Thailand seem so westernized in comparison.
I went to Phnom Penh in the afternoon (the girls didn't really fancy it), it was quite a cool little temple. I say this purely because it had fairy lights round the buddha!!! hahaha!
Had dinner in a cool little Khmer place, and then we headed back to hostel. I'm getting bored of being a goody goody and not drinking - really not me! Mic thought she had bed bugs so asked to move beds in the hostel, I had some little friends in my bed but they didn't bite so I wasn't too bothered! I know some of you will read this and this "GROSSE" but its no worse than camping! The only thing I am beginning to loathe is mosquitos - I seem to be their favourite to nibble on!
The hostel was a mixed dorm so we had two guys and another girl staying. The girl was american and a bit of a wet fish, one guy was also american but he was nice and told us some helpful tips for Vietnam and the last guy was from london - didn't have particularly good chat at all!
