We drove out from Yass in the afternoon, conveniently forgetting to visit and ATM. The road is fairly winding but quite impressive when it crosses the Murrumbidgee. We had been to a performance of John Warner's song cycle, Yarri of Wiradgeri the night before telling the story about the 1852 flood in which an local aborignal man rescues a number of settlers from the flooding murrumbidgee. I'd also learnt in the Canberra Times that week that Wee Jasper and Yass had been home to quite a few bushrangers in it's time.
We arrived at the general store and realised that we could just scrap $15 together from Tory and my wallets, the kids wallets and the floor of the car. Given that the cave entry was $38.50 we were going to be in a bit of trouble and the winding road back go Yass was not looking to inviting. I asked the young girl at the store if they did EFTPOS cash withdrawals with a purchase, she said no. Does anyone one else in a Wee Jasper have an ATM or do EFTPOS? She said no. We decided to try the "Stables" bar/restaurant across the road.
The Stables was excellent, did a seafood platter, chicken and beef burgers and also allowed us to take $50 cash out of EFTPOS. We were not to impressed with the general store service but happy to have enough money to continue the adventure.
We drove up to Billy Grace reserve. The camp site had a running stream, toilets and showers and only about 5-6 campers. We had sausages for dinner on the electric BBQs and were entertained by the local farmer bringing a few hundred sheep into the BBQ area.
At one point during the night, Heath, who had been very enthusiastic about camping stated "I never want to go camping again dad". Unfortunately the tree in front of the toilet block cast a scary shadow on the tent wall. We eventually did get some sleep though.
