Driving into the state of Himachal
Pradesh the landscape changed. Much to our delight we saw green
trees, bushes and high mountains in the distance. Then the first
downpour came and gave our bodies the long longed for cool down.
Finally it was a good temperature for sleeping, however, our new
friends eagerness for conversation, at 4:30 in the morning, made
matters difficult. When we arrived in Shimla we were invited for
breakfast at his mothers place. There we were welcomed heartily fed
thoroughly. Here we learned to drink a mango. Simply bite one end
off, squeeze and suck out the deliciousness. Since then we can't live
without our daily dose.
As at this time of year, the city of
Shimla is packed with Indian tourists, escaping the heat of the
plains, Dev had arranged for us to stay at his sisters house. We paid
for room and board and shared life with a mother, two daughters and a
cousin. Much to their amusement, we promised to cook on the second
night. This was to prove quiet difficult as many of the ingredients
we are used to are hard to find in this part of the world. We slaved
for what felt like hours in their tiny kitchen, simultaneously
answering a hundred nosy questions of what we were doing. We were
pleased with the result of our cooking. Just as we had put the food
on the table the mother rushed of to whip up rice and chapati,
staples of the Indian diet which she couldn't imagine going a day
without. Everybody seemed to enjoy the meal...
