8th August 2005.

29 years old today!

we got up and made our way out to hells gate, another thermal park with lots of smelly attractions before we decided to make the long drive up to the Bay of Islands as we were getting a little worried about time. The day was spent travelling for 8 hours, finally arriving at place called Oakura where we thought we may stay the night. We drove around, not much there, followed the road and nearly ended up on the beach with the tide coming in. We turned around and camped out by the roadside.

We made it to Russell and after washing our clothes it was time to celebrate my birthday. The afternoon was spent doing a little fishing, although it was more like fish feeding than fishing as I didn't get on bite. We met a man and his son from NSW in oz who kept pulling the fish out of the water. They didn't pass on too many tips though. Russell is a lovely little place, its more of a holiday place for new zealanders in the summer time with a lot of houses there just set up as holiday homes. It does have the oldest church in NZ and also one of the historic flagstaff's in the country. For a birthday meal we went out to a restaurant called Sally's where we had Scallops and bread to start, mains of rack of lamb and fresh snapper, followed by homemade whisky mousse chocolate cake and a whit chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake (andrea you have to try it. Its better than that shabby cake shop in st kilda). We then went out to do a spot of night fishing, where i caught my first fish, a Kawahai. It was a keeper so we prepared it so we could have it for lunch the next day.
