July 28th 2005

We attemped the walk up the glacier today, however the weather itself had been miserable over the last few days and had therefore washed away the steps that are used to walk onto the ice. We made it up the hill before being told we could go no further. It was a shame but safety first we suppose. We did have a walk around the foot of the glacier and had a go with an ice axe, wooh!. As time was pressing we moved on and decided not to go for the trip again in the afternoon. We drove up to Punakaiki to see the Pancake rocks, a group of limestone rocks that have, over time, formed into what looks like a stack of thin pancakes. When the tide is good, which it was today, the water is forced through the rocks and blowholes and you are treated with an explosion of water. It was great, and we got wet but it was worth it. After our time there we pressed on to Hamner Springs by way of a 4 hour drive (already travelling 3 to get here) meaning it was a hell of a long day driving.
