Jul 22 2005.

We drove off to Milford Sound, forewarned that we may need snow chains, but the drive itself turned out to be pretty uneventful. We were met with the most amazing scenery that we have seen here in New Zealand. Coasting along the road alongside huge snowcapped mountains. It just doesn't get much better. We stopped off at the mirror lakes first of all, and then headed all the way into Milford Sound. It meant travelling through Homer tunel. Literally to get through a mountain, between 1935 and 1953, a big hole was dug. It's still there but a little patched up now. We heeded the warning signs and didn't stop due to the chance of an avalanche and eventually came to the sound. Its a beautiful place, although the road there was better than the place itself. We made our way back stopping at the Chasm walk featuring a strangely shaped waterfall where the water had carved strange shapes out of te rocks, and then onto The Divide which was another raging torrent of water coming down from the mountains. We finally made our way to Lake Gunn and walked the nature trail before camping at the Doc site situated there. It was amazing place to camp, not a person in sight on the edge of the lake. The only problem was the rain thundering on the roof of the van all night long....
