Akaroa looks better in the daylight. It was the first french settlement site in NZ. The landed in 1840, however only days before the french arrived, the brits got wind of it and raised the flag at Akaroa claiming british sovereignty. This could have meant that the south island of NZ could have been french speaking if the french had been a little quicker.
We walked around the town, taking in the french architecture and snazzy little street names, still in french. Even the backpackers hostel there was named in french. We spet a few hours taking in the sights before heading back to Christchurch to buy some proper walking boots and some thermal socks, before driving on to Lake Tekapo to spend the night. Just to make you all feel better at home, it was still chucking it down.
