5th July 2005.

We caught the 6.30 am bus to ranbow beach, just. The owner of the hostel told us to call him to get a lift there. We called. He didn't get up so we ran 1km in about 5 minutes loaded with pacs. Once on the bus there were 4 pople on it, 2 canadians and 2 germans. We arrived at Rainbow beach and checked in ready for our 4pm meeting about our trip to Fraser Island. At the meeting we got grouped together and shown a few videos about what to expect. Dingo's and their man eating abilities, ditches, 4x4 dangers, the works. As this was a self drive for 3 days we had no choice but to pay attention. We were grouped up with 8 germas on our trip. 2 of them were the girls from the bus we caught in the morning (and they were also on the bus down from Airlie aswell!)Lucie and Roberta. We had a few drinks, then off to bed for the next 2 nights would be sleeping in tent.

6th July 2005.

It was up early to pack the van with all our belongings, food, tents, cooker, and special shovel for those moments you cant find a toilet. We set off for the ferry, landed on the island then made our way up to Indian head to see what we could see. Unfortunately there were no sea animals on show but the rain came and that kept us all occupied for a while. We stopped at the SS moheno, a shop that had been left to rot on the island after it became detatched from its towing cables and beached on Frasr. We camped the first night on the beach, making sure that we locked all food away just in case we had a few hungry dingo's. We'd already seen some as we got off the ferry. In the group we had Victor and Cynthia, Sylvia and Barbaa (not very good english speaking but had learnt loads over the last 5 weeks) , Lucie and Roberta (Lucie was better at english than me and Sarah, Roberta was just tapped bless her. She kept us amused for hours.), and Susan and Ute (rhymes with scooter)

7th July 2005

It didn't take long before we found out who were nice people in the group and who were the, lets just say, Stereotypical germans. It wasn't excuse me, it was ATTENTION!!! and lots of talking over you as you were speaking to other people. This really pissed me and Sarah off as well as the other germans. It was Ute and Susan who tried to be very domineering, but alas they didn't expect to have me to contend with and I ensured that everyone had their say rather than them two. It was up at 6a,. where we were greeted with humpback whales just off shore, and on to Eli creek, the pinnacles, rainbow gorge and for the afternoon lake mackenzie. Lake Mackenzie is just beautiful. When you open your eyes underwater its unbelievable. The colour changes so clearly from light to dark blue. We camped in the forest after crossing some crazy terrain in the 4x4, and learnt that another groups wheel fell off their van. I promptly checked ours and found a few loose nuts......

8th July 2005.

The group was asked where they wanted to go on the last day. Ute decided to answer for all without asking them. The option was Rainforest walk or back to Mackenzie. Ute said that the rainforest walk was not a real rainforest. I begged to differ pointing out that the name gave it away. She didn't understand the sarcasm. It was on to lake mackenzie for a freezing cold swim before driving around the south of the island to get back on the ferry. That night we went to archies for food, had a few beers with lucie, roberta, and barbara and called it a night. It was great spending time with these ladies. We'd like to thank them for their great company.

9th July and 10th July

We painted and decorated our own didgeridoo's. thats about it really. prety cool they are too!. We also went to the carlo sandblow. a magnificent sand dune high up on a hillside. We watched the sunset before heading back to the hostel and to pack.
