13th June 2005

Well we arrived at the airport at 1am, as our hostel owner would put it later in the day:- "so you guys arrived on the sparrow fart did ya?". What that means, we don't know. Being 1am, we couldn't part with $50 for a bed for the night, so we did what a lot of others were doing and stayed at the airport for the night. We looked like a pair of homeless people huddled up on a row of airport seats, eventually Sarah opted for comfort and laid across the 2 rucksacks, whilst I got the lovely floor spot. Sarah slept for hours, me for a few minutes. We managed to book in to a place called Travellers Oasis, and to their credit let us book in from 7am. We grabbed a cab, operated by an Englishman from Surrey, made our way to the hostel, and then grabbed some well needed rest. Becky and Paul, friends from Sydney, were also staying there so we had the place on a good recommendation.

We awoke a few hours later and took a tour down to the esplanade, had a look around the lagoon (there is no beach in Cairns, and they have had crocodile sightings on the sea front) and generally wandered around the place for a few hours. We met up with Carol and Tom, us now seemingly to be their "stalker" friends, hoping to get on the same day trip as them the next day, but alas they had just sold the last seat. We had a couple of beers in PJ O'brians before heading back to the hostel for a good nights rest.

Becky woke us at 12pm, as we had missed her and Paul yesterday, so we went into town, had a few more drinks at PJ O'Brians and caught up n what we'd all been doing. We also asked in a dive shop about a medical for Sarah, so we managed to get that booked in also. having asthma is a bit of an issue for dive companies, so you have to be fully checked before they'll agree to teach you.

Just a lazy day around the lagoon in Cairns. In the evening we went for a curry, Sarah ordering a Bindh Aloo, a hot one at that. The waiter explained that in Australia they call curries by slightly different names, for example, a Bindh Aloo is actually a Vindaloo in the UK. Sarah had just ordered one of the hottest curries around. It was very nice, but was not hot. They still can't get spicy right over here. The couldnt even get the spelling correct on the plates in the restaurant, as they printed "restaurent" on their plates. Nice touch. It was out after the meal with Tom and Carol for their last night (this is about 15 times we have had a last supper with these 2!).
