15th March 2005

After the birthday celebrations we decided to go to Taronga Zoo, which is based on the north shore of Sydney. We grabbed a ferry from circular quay and made our way across the water. We took a cable-car up to the zoo and proceeded to walk around the "maze like" paths that the zoo had. It was an impressive place, but a little disorientating due to the new building works that were ongoing. Due to the heat the tigers did absolutely nothing, apart from laze around on top of a wooden platform, and the same went for the lions. The bears were a little more active, little being the operative word here, but the gorilla's at least gave some entertainment. We went to see them via a window into their sleeping area and a small fellow, probably the age of a toddler spotted us at the window. The little gorilla decided to then lick the window and drag his tongue across it, knowing he was the centre of attention. He then went on to annoy some of the larger gorilla's who were prbably trying to get away from the little one. We ended the day watching the chimps play around, one of the baby ones taking great pleasure in climbing up a post then throwing himself off it into a net that was positioned below. We sat and watched for about 30 mins before a zoo warden appeared to tell us the zoo had closed 45 minutes ago. OOps. Needless to say we made our way back to the ferry and took the crossing via a great sunset over the harbour bridge.

Sarah finally did it. She managed to pluck up the courage and go and get her hair cut. The words of wisdon given to her back home by a hairdresser was "if you are going to get it cut, make sure the hairdresser is english and don't let them touch the layers!". To comfirm her previous hairdressers doubts about aussie hairdressers, we went into a saoln upon arriving in Sydney looking for the holy grail that is Lanza, and the salon owner replied "oh we dont have that, we're about 10 years behind the Uk for stuff like that". So as you can see, going to the hairdressers was quite a big thing...needless to say she was nervous but as her hair was getting a little out of control it had to be done. She returned 2 hours later, not knowing what to feel. Her hair looked fine but alas, it wasn't what she wanted. If she had her way she would have probably flown back to the UK to have had it cut.!
