25th February 2005.

Today, another of the Birch clan set foot on Sydney soil, and we were there at the airport to meet them. Laura and Fran, on their 3 month tour of New Zealand, Australia, and Thailand arrived. We waited below the walkway where they disembarked the plane, and sods law, we went one way to meet them at the bottom of the escalator. and they went to the other side. Sarah was a little giddy and emotional to say the least, but not seeing her sister for 4 months she was bound to be. There were big hugs all around before we headed off back to the city. The night was spent, once again, down at the opera bar so Laura and Fran could experience the effects of seeing the bridge and opera house in all their glory. Tom, Carol, Nic, and Rob joined us for drinks.

Today we took Laura and Fran on a tour of Sydney. It was walking boots on, then off to see some of the main sights. We popped into the QVB to se the architecture (although Sarah and Laura had other ideas) but Fran and me stood firm, and didn't allow any shopping, browsing, trying on, and "ooh can we just look in here for a minute??". Meadowhall withdrawal symptoms are evident now the two of them are together. We made our way down Geaorge St, up through Martin Place and then through the Domain where we had planned to take them on Sunday evening for another free show. We made it to the botanical gardens, confusing Laura by saying that the bats hanging from the trees were pieces of fruit. Granted she didn't have her glasses on. Fran decided to take a little light refreshment from the water fountain, turned it on a little too much and got a little wet all over his face. We continued down to Mrs Macs Chair and had a few photos with the opera house and harbour bridge in the background, and at the same time, interrupt wedding photograhs being taken. We made our way back home via the opera house and circular quay, so we literally walked all over Sydney.

We picked up the hire car today (as we are off to the Blue Mountains tomorrow), but used it to take Laura and Fran up to Palm Beach to see where Home and Away was filmed. We packed up some sandwiches and off we went. We took a walk up and down the beach, with Laura happily singing away to herself the Home and Away theme tune, and if you know Laura, or Sarah, or mother Carol, you'll know that
1) She was out of tune, and
2) She was 30 seconds out of time......

In the evening we went to Tropfest, which is a short film festival held around the country and broadcast at the same time. Heath Ledger (a knights tale), Geoffrey Rush (that bad guy in pirates of the carribean) were there in Sydney to present some on the awards. Mr Rush did look a little pished (to coin a phrase from those pesky scots tom and carol). We once again had a picnic, ate well, and drank a great deal.
