Up early at 4.50am to get the plane to Sydney. We had a bumpy take off and landing but a pretty good flight and when we arrived we flew over the harbor and saw the bridge and opera house from the plane - an excellent view. But even better was the news when T turned on his phone - Ann and Garry have a little son, Jake! Congrats guys!!

Took us a few hours to get through customs which was a tad excessive but luckily our bus wasn't until 2pm. We were knackered and slept most of the way to Canberra. It was lovely to see the family again and going back to their lovely house and having delicious homemade soup felt a bit like going home.

The next day we set off to explore the city. It's very widely spaced out and has loads of huge open spaces so it doesn't really feel like a capital but it's a lot nicer than most cities. We went to the Canberra Exibition which tells the story of the towns history and also checked out the Captain Cook Memorial Jet - wonder what he would make of that? We walked on across town to Capital Hill where we visited the old and new parliment buildings. The new one is built into the hill with a grass roof and is quite elaborate. We checked out the chambers and went on to the roof to get great views of the city. We were looking forward to seeing the Aboriginal tent embassy outside the old parliment and possibly getting to talk with some of the representatives but there were only 3 tents and no sign of life.

It's surprisingly cold here - not what we expected Oz to be like so we spent the next day in the Australian Museum. It's a very funky, ultra-modern building and a work of art in itself. The whoile museum was designed so that everything has mopre than one meaning - on the walls there is giant braile which spells out Oz phrases. The museum is planned around the 3 ideas of Land, Nation, People and really is a wonderful place to visit. That night we visited more family for a great nights eating, drinking and craic.

We took the next couple of days easy with some wanderings around the town and hanging out with the family. It was a great relaxing few days and so good to be with family in a nice comfortable house. We wouldn't have minded staying a bit longer but we have plans for Sydney and a plane booked for Alice Springs so we had to head on. So glad we came down though.
