Flag of Fiji  , Viti Levu,
Monday, December 1, 2008

... which is Fijian for hello.

Fiji, officially  Sovereign Democratic Republic of Fiji,  Fijian Viti,  country and archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean. It surrounds the Koro Sea about 2,100 kilometres north of Auckland, N.Z. The archipelago consists of 333 islands (100 inhabited) and 540 islets scattered over about 3,000,000 square kilometres.  The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population.

We arrive in Nadi, (which they pronounce Nandi for one or another reason), after going from Hawaii to Auckland first.  At the airport we inquire how to take a taxi and when we tell them where we want to go, they say that a shuttle is going to take us. I do not believe it. And I am wrong. Ten minutes ride and we arrive at our hotel.

I liked the hotel from the minute we arrived. Sometimes it is difficult to tell why.

Nadi is the third-largest conurbation in Fiji. It is located on the western side of the main island of Viti Levu, and had a population of 42,284 at the most recent census, in 2007. Nadi is multiracial with many of its inhabitants Indian or Fijian, along with a large transient population of foreign tourists. Along with sugar cane production, tourism is a mainstay of the local economy. The Nadi region has a higher concentration of hotels and motels than any other part of Fiji.

We were on our way for more than 20 hours, so we chill out the whole day of arrival.

The next day, we take a taxi to Port Denarau, a suburb of Nadi. To visit the Hard Rock Cafe, of course! Port Denarau is in fact a shopping center.  The HRC is the most disappointing I ever saw. It is like a little bar/restaurant in a shop.  But, I LOVE my food: it is the starter combo: a bit of everything. And I have to take pictures of the Madonna section for my friend Springmuis.  Tomcat finds a Pandora jewellery shop and probably regrets it by now.

The next day, we make a lot of plans and stay at the hotel:  I really really have to update my website.  The pool area is very cosy, the food is cheap (although, do NOT have the pizza: yuk!) and people are friendly.

But: I feel guilty sitting at a swimming pool in Fiji, not doing anything.  So: Dr T rents a car: we pick it up tomorrow morning at the airport.

To drive where? To do what?

Wait and see.
