Where I stayed
After tanking it is 10h30 when we leave. The 'businesses' at the side of the road change every couple of kilometres: car parts, wood, cement, stuff in cool boxes, cashew nuts ... . We are glad to have our own wheels. The luggage on those public transport busses is piled up metres high. When people get off, surely they need something from the bottom of that pile! Still, you can be worse of, you can be transport at the back of a truck, certainly when you come to the 'pothole road' as we call it. As from Xia-Xia, about half way, there is a 150 km terrible road. Potholes of a meter deep. And we already learned our lesson from potholes! 150 km of accelerating, breaking and concentrating. Then, we go back to normal. After 7 hours, we arrive in Inhambane town. Tofo should be close now. The road changes into a dirt road and we are not sure, if we are going the right direction. Almost no signposts and we do not have a map. Half an hour later, we arrive at Fatma's nest. As you can imagine, no room is booked for us. We get a beach hut en-suite. I am thrilled about the en-suite. But it is a dump. The 'bathroom' is a crooked toilet (it would not fit straight) a sink and a shower head coming out of the ceiling next to is. A sarong (not washed for years) separates it from the bedroom. No airco, 1 mosquito net (not big enough for a double bed) and a noisy fan.
We have not eaten all day, so drop off the luggage and go to the restaurant.
Dr T orders chicken and immediately has a 4 legged friend. I TRY to have calamari curry. I get tomato prawns. Give them back. Get fried calamari. Eat them.
We see people, we briefly met in Malputo. It is weird, sitting in the middle of Mozambique and weaving at people. Our pretty Scandinavian friend calls the place a shithole and she saw it during the daylight! Where did we end up NOW?
After a couple of rounds of cards, we go to bed. Tomorrow, in the sunshine, it will look different.
