OUR BLOG

Today we travelled from Timaru to Rakaia, which only leaves us 60kms to Christchurch airport tomorrow. We could not decide if we wanted to come to Rakaia or to Ashburton to camp tonight but this part of the road on the East Coast is very similar to Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire…..quite flat and featureless. Ashburton was given a quick drive through and we looked at each other and said no with our eyes. So here we are at a very nice rural campsite in the woods.

Our other task today on the way here was to photograph some bits of Ealing but the whole township of Ealing was nowhere on the road. We went slowly where it should have been but it had gone. So no photos of Flats of Ealing for the Foulkes family…sorry.

When we arrived we realised that it was time to pack, so out came the backpacks and they really did feel heavy even when empty. However nearly everything fitted after dumping some of my favourite trousers and tops so that I could fit Helens fleeces and raincoats in my backpack…that's love for you.

We decided to eat anything left in our fridge or cupboards for our evening meal, so that should be really exciting, especially as we still have lots of brown sauce left. It really has saved us a lot of money eating in rather than out each day.

We walked through the woods this afternoon to the river having seen in reception the size of the trout and salmon that have been caught there only last week. A very popular fishing spot. But this afternoon it was very low water in the river, so we just had a swim.

Back to the campsite and a swim in the small pool, followed by a walk into town to find a beer spot. The weather this morning while travelling was cloudy and frequently raining till we passed Ashburton and then the blue sky came and it has been about 28 degrees ever since.

Helen has just told me that we have to clean the campervan before handing it back……so got to go. Christchurch tomorrow with Daniel and Gemma.
