We left Wytheville at 9:30 this morning.  We took 21 S and picked up the parkway out of Sparta.  OK - it was a beautiful trip from hell!  We didn't get to Asheville till 5:30!  Yes, we made a few stops to take pictures and lunch.... the twists and turns took forever.  As you can tell, the scenery was spectacular.  We can't imagine what it must look like in the fall when the colors are in full range - as well as all the sight seers.  At least we lucked out there and the traffic was light.
One of the spectacular vistas was the viaduct.  The original owner wouldn't sell the land so the engineers, wanting to keep the theme of the parkway, built the road out from mountain.  It's almost like a bridge.  Didn't get a picture of it since we were all dumbfounded when we saw it.  As you will notice, some of the pictures were taken while we were riding.
The tunnels are the actual rock of the mountain.  As we're riding through, we looked up and again it took our breath to see that it was basically a whole in the mountain.
We, suprisingly, only saw 2 deer.  We expected to see elk and moose crossing the road at any turn.
When we were in the valleys, it was surprising to see homes here and there.  Very interesting, seeing as there isn't anything in the area.  Some of the homes were on the side of the mountains with NOTHING around.  The houses were spectacular.  The horses were part of a family farm.  You can see a glimpse of it.
