Where I stayed
So my dream of experiencing Dirty Dancing in reality and not just on a television screen was fulfilled when i arrived in Virginia. I had to take a hour long shuttle to the hotel from the airport but it was so worth making all the effort just to see it for myself. My only negative would be that the lake has dried up because of major drought there so i couldn't see that but everything else was there for me to take in.
I arrived at night so everything was lit up so beautifully, (the hotel is very high up in the mountains your ears pop constantly.) They even had dirty dancing in the gazebo just like in the movie, so it was cool to start off my 2 day stay like that. I really felt like i had stepped into the movie. Even the crickets sounded just like they did 20 years ago, it was so weird to hear it for myself. I was pretty buggard aswell from being in airports all day so i went to bed after walking around the grounds, but my thirst for everything dirty dancing was there so i couldn't wait for the next day to arrive
I had breakfast in the famous dining room that all fans of the movie will know, so that was really nice, then i just walked around took pictures, relaxed and read a book on Elvis i bought. So i needed a break from all the travelling and this day of doing nothing but sitting and reading a book in the sun was magical. I really recharged being there in nature and the mountains were just beautiful all around me. The hotel had a dirty dancing locations guide, but being me i found others that weren't listed. So i saw all the places i wanted or could at the hotel and relaxed as i did it...all i was missing was Patrick Swayze himself :)
So i saw the cabin the houseman's stayed in, the Gazebo in daylight, saw where their car arrives at the hotel, movie stuff the hotel had on the walls, and a few other things that look just as they did in the film. The fence Baby and johnny walk over when they go to find Penny is still there today, apparently the movie crew put that in and they also kept the sign up where baby is carrying her watermelon...so i really did feel like i was right there in the movie. I had a four course meal for dinner included in my room rate, so i had soup and salad and ricotta and spinach shells, and the ultimate chocolate cake. I even saw a wedding there as i was sitting reading. So that just shows how lovely a place it was and how fans of the movie still do come back to this place and relive it for themselves. It was fantastic and i would go back anytime.
Can't wait to see everyone,
