Well after enduring another 9 hour 'VIP' journey Phonsavan itself was a little disappointing. With nothing to do in the town, not even finding a place to drink, we intended to keep the trip here short and sweet and take in the 'recommended'. We took a tour bus to the jars the next day and found ourselves in baron landscape among a load of jar shapes carved from rock. To be honest we were both a little disappointed. The fact that they had no explanation as to why they were there added to it. What was more interesting was the fact that this whole area was bombed heavily by the Americans because they saw the area as a vantage point to attack Vietnam not even to attack Laos! During their attack there were more bombs dropped here than the total dropped on Germany and Japan together during the second world war.The equivalent to a plane load of bombs being dropped every eight minutes for eight years. Alot of Bombs!! As you can imagine there were alot of unexploded blombs still lying around and as casulties were still quite common we were not allowed to stray off the marked pathes, even for the call of nature. There has been massive clearances of the area and because metal was costly alot of the shells were used by villages to act as supports for their houses, flower pots and fencing. The town was littered with bits aswell, our hotel using them for a 'bomb' barbeque... we didn't bother.

BOMBS AWAY
Hi again. Well at least you had the opportunity to go to a BBQ that could have gone off with a Bang!! What's in the desert drinks? Would love to know. Happy Trekking. Chris XX
