We had all the motivation needed to get packed up and start on the 10 mile hike to the Appalachian trail (the spine of the Smoky Mountains). The whole thing seemed to be uphill, winding back on ourselves through the forestry. Whilst it was difficult there was a sense of achievement when we finally arrived at a summit to see a fantastic view of the park.

Pigs and subzero temperatures forgotten about, we began the decent with intention of getting back to the car to avoid another night in the wilderness. Typically I went over on my ankle and had to hobble for 3 miles and Lukes dodgy calf seized up again. The both of us planned on climbing Machu Pichu in 2 months, if this was anything to go by our bodies were in for a shock. We stumbled to the car, headed to Wendy's and prayed that our next couch surf would be in luxury.
