Where I stayed
Another day with some sun. We caught the ferry from Tarbert to Killimer across the Shannon River. It was an unbelievably smooth 20 minute ride; so smooth that Ruth didn't realise the ferry was moving for half the journey. We then drove to Kilrush and, after lunch, we visited the Vandeleur Walled gardens. These had been established in the 1900s by the Vandeleur family who were the local landlords. They have been restored by a project set up by the Clare County Council and are beautifully maintained.
We visited the Kilrush Library and then streets associated with Tom's family; Pound Street, Hector Street and O'Deas Road. To help Tom the local librarian asked the Ennis librarian how O'Deas Road got its name and within 24 hours Tom had an email explaining that it was named after a hero with the IRA who was killed. Before dinner we visited Mary O'Dea who lives in the main street but she was not able to shed any light on Tom's family.
