He says:

So we have now been in Prague for a couple of days and, as Gaynor is curled up in bed with a bad cold and has forbidden me from doing any major sightseeing, I thought I would share my initial impressions of the place.  First of all, no great surprise, but it is beautiful...  And that counts for the entire city...  We have been walking pretty much everywhere because every street seems to be more beautiful then the last.  Which bring me to my second observation, which is tourist's are generally very stupid...  this can be observed on two level's, one being prices and the second being totally blind.  Prague has got to have one of the biggest gradients of prices over the shortest possible distance, take beer for example...  At Prague castle .5 litre of Pilsner Urquell sells for >90 crowns (about $6), while literally 2 blocks away the same beer costs <30 crowns (~$2) and the same applies to everything...  This I believe is largely due to the fact that tourists don't stray more then 1 block from any tourist area...  Tourist areas=packed! 2 blocks away=deserted streets...  Anyway, other then annoying Gaynor by insisting we find a 'real' Czech pub where noone spoke english on the first night we were here, this reality has suited us fine as we are able to see the touristy stuff and get authentic food and beer very easily... I have found, in many cases, the back streets to be far more interesting anyway.  The last observation I would make is that Globalisation is fucked!  Prague now has, in addition to the Starbucks, Maccas and KFC on every corner, Marc's and Spencers, Tesco's and every major European and American store...  It really takes the excitment and adventure out of travelling somewhere different...  You really get the feeling that Prague would have been so much better 10 years ago before all the English Bucks and Hens parties arrived.  I am annoying Gaynor somewhat by insisting that we not go to anywhere with an English menu or writing...

Our apartment is very cool, located in a ancient building about a 15-20 minute walk from Old Town Square, in, thank christ, a more residential area (no english writing here...  The beer is as good and as cheap as you could want (same price as soft drinks).  The food is great...  As long as you like meat and cabbage (you can always go to Maccas...) I had half a roast duck last night with saurkraut, and an orgy of different meat on a platter the night before, all washed down with copiuous amounts of the cheapest/best beer I will ever have :(...  I am working my way up to a 1.5kg pork knuckle (even though I don't like pork...  What can I say, when in Rome...).

So far we have seen Prague Castle, New Town (where we live), Old Town, Charles Bridge (we walked from Prague Castle across charles bridge to Old Town Square and then back to our apartment.  We are getting quite good at this walking caper...  So now we have done the majority of the touristy things the rest of the week will be spent exploring the other side of Prague (and partaking in more fine golden nectar...).

Until next time...

Thanks...
Thanks for the additional photo of the apartment - it looks just fine and rather grand! But you do realise that the bed is made (so you no longer have the 'Unmade Bed 1 - 12' series)? I hope Gaynor has been able to get out of it again and is feeling very much better.
