We also spent a day out at the Tiahanaco ruins datinbg from 700 AD onwards - an interesting day and the huge monoliths were a highlight... but you get the impression it will be a lot more interesting in 10 years or so when the Bolivians have found the time (and money) to unearth more of the site.
We found La Pax to be a really fun city and its setting, filling the sides of a steep gorge down from the Altiplano, with the 6400m Illumani mountain towering over, is as dramatic as the guidebooks suggest if not more so! The centre of town is just one huge street market - the problem is you have to know exactly which street to go to to get your item (be it bathtubs, light bulbs, pots and pans, pirated CDs or whatever) and once you get to that street you´re faced with a whole row of shops all selling that item and nothing else... Much of the items were of dubious origen but great fun to wander round.
